Friday August 21
It calmed down in the night and was completely still and
beautiful in the morning.
After taking Bina to shore I stowed the raft and pulled
anchor and we left.
Today was the day we had to make the decision whether to
tackle Milbanke Sound or not. Milbanke
Sound is a third open ocean crossing, but shorter. But, there is a more circuitous route through
a narrow passage (Reid Passage) that allows one to avoid Milbanke Sound
altogether.
I made the decision to take Reid Passage and skip Milbanke
Sound today.
It is really not a difficult route, just more twists and
turns. I have been using a navigational
application called Coastal Explorer which I run on my laptop. I have set in all the days’ routes ahead of
time and then when I am piloting on the flybridge I activate the route and
follow it from there. It is extremely
helpful.
Reid Passage is very narrow and you must announce your
passage before entering to avoid running into a large vessel or perhaps a tug
with a barge in tow transiting the other direction. We had an uneventful passage.
We made our way into Shearwater Resort and Marina, and took
on fuel there before tying up.
We stayed 2 nights here at Shearwater and I have several pictures that I will post on the next entry.
